A Statewide Partnership Advancing Organ Donation
At any given moment, approximately 2,500 Ohioans are in need of an organ for transplant and last year 200 of those people died while waiting. Ohio’s organ procurement organizations are partnering with the Ohio Hospital Association on the Ohio Organ Donation Breakthrough Initiative, which aims to shrink the number of deaths to zero.

This goal can be met if the state’s top 30 high organ donor-potential hospitals meet the Initiative’s two objectives:

  • Ohio currently converts individuals who are eligible to donate an organ into actual donations at a rate of about 60 percent. The initiative looks to reach a 75 percent conversion rate by the end of 2007.

  • Ohio currently procures 3.19 organs per donor. The initiative looks to increase the number to a rate of 3.75 organs per donor.

This initiative is working to ensure more healthy organs reach the people whose lives depend on them, ultimately ensuring that no Ohioan dies while waiting for an organ transplant.
